Wallpapering in Darlaston

Wallpapering in Darlaston: feature walls, full rooms, lining paper and stripping. Patterns matched, seams flat, walls prepared first.

Papering an old Darlaston wall is mostly about what is under it. Walls that have been papered four times need stripping and lining before anything decorative goes up, or every flaw underneath shows through the new paper within a month.

Almost nothing in a house this age is square, and wallpaper is unforgiving about it. The alcoves either side of a Darlaston chimney breast are rarely the same width, and a patterned paper hung without allowing for that will show the error down the whole run.

What's involved

The Wallpapering job in Darlaston

01

Stripped and prepared

Old paper off, walls washed down, filled and sized. The bit that decides whether the new paper stays flat.

02

Lining where it is needed

On uneven old plaster, lining paper first is the difference between a good job and a lumpy one.

03

Patterns matched properly

Drops planned so the pattern runs true across corners and around the chimney breast.

04

Feature walls

One wall, done well, is often all a room needs, and it costs a fraction of the full job.

05

Set out for out-of-square walls

Started from the most visible corner rather than the nearest one, so the unavoidable error ends up where nobody looks instead of beside the window.

06

Rolls worked out before you buy

Measured against the pattern repeat and your actual walls, so you order once and from one batch.

Good to know

Wallpapering: what to know

Do I need lining paper?

On the older Darlaston plaster, usually yes. It costs a little more and it is the difference between paper that lies flat and paper that shows every hollow in the wall behind it.

Can you strip the old paper first?

Yes, and we price it in. Stripping is unpredictable, sometimes it comes off in sheets, sometimes it fights, so we quote it as part of the job rather than as an extra later.

How long does a feature wall take?

Usually half a day once the wall is prepared. If it needs stripping and lining first, allow a day and a half in total.

How much paper do I need to buy?

Tell us the paper and the rolls get worked out from the pattern repeat and your actual walls before you order. Buying short on a batch is the one mistake that cannot be fixed later.

Do you supply the paper?

Usually you choose and buy it, so you get exactly the pattern you want. Heavy papers and wide repeats take longer to hang, which is worth knowing when you choose.

Can you paper over what is already up?

Better not. It looks acceptable for about a year and then lifts at the seams, taking the new paper with it.
